If I get a new iPhone when the iPhone 5 comes out, will I be able to copy everything from my Mac to the iPhone via sync or backup? Backup means copying your personal data from your phone to your computer.
That includes application settings, text messages, voicemails, etc. Sync means copying new apps, music, video, or books from iTunes to your phone, or from your phone to iTunes. You can think of it this way: backup saves a copy of stuff you've created, and sync copies media you have downloaded via the iTunes Store. Backup copies everything, but Sync only copies what you choose through iTunes. By default, it copies everything, but you can fine tune it all you want.
You might want to stop movies from syncing to your phone if you never use it to watch movies, for example. Unless you've changed the settings, when you connect your iPhone to your computer, iTunes always performs a backup first, then a sync. When you connect a new iPhone to your computer, iTunes will offer to reconfigure it using the latest backup it has.
Syncing your iOS device with iTunes allows you to copy information more detailed list below to your iOS device from you computer and vice versa. Here is an Apple support article on backing up your iOS device which provides more details. When you connect your iOS device to your computer it will perform a backup before it will continue to sync automatically.
A backup saves all the information on your iOS device to your computer so that if you get a new iOS device or in your case an iPhone 5 your computer will ask you if you would like to perform a restore which will copy all of your settings from your old device to your new device. The information is presented in three sections: iPhone, Backups, and Options.
The first section of the Summary screen lists your iPhone's total storage capacity, phone number, serial number, and the version of the iOS the phone is running. The first Summary section contains two buttons:. This section controls your backup preferences. In the Automatically Back Up section, choose where your iPhone will back up its contents: iCloud or your computer.
You can back up to both, but not at the same time. The options section contains a list of configuration settings. The first three are more important to most users than others on the list. At the bottom of the Summary screen is a bar that displays your phone's capacity and how much space each type of data takes on your iPhone.
Hover over a section of the bar to see additional information about each category. If you make changes to the Summary screen, click Apply at the bottom of the screen. Click Sync to update your iPhone based on the new settings. Want to change the name of your iPhone? You can do that from the Summary screen, too. Navigate to the content type in question for detailed instructions on how to sync that content between your iPhone and computer.
Select the Music tab in the left panel of iTunes. Additional options include:. On the Movies tab, you control the syncing of movies and videos that aren't TV shows. Click the box next to Sync Movies to enable syncing of movies to your iPhone. When you activate this feature, select individual movies in the box that appears below.
To sync a given movie, click its checkbox. When you click it, all other options become available. Podcasts have the same syncing options as Movies and TV Shows. Click the box next to Sync Podcasts to access the options. You can choose to sync none or all of your podcasts, just like with TV shows, as well as those fitting specific criteria.
If you wish to sync some podcasts, but not others, select a podcast and then select the episodes you want to sync with your iPhone by clicking the box next to each episode.
You can also save your PDFs to your iPhone. Check the box next to Sync Books to enable the syncing of books from your hard drive to your iPhone.
When you check this, two options activate. If you choose Selected books , check the box next to each book you want to sync.
After selecting Audiobooks from the menu in the left panel, click the box next to Sync Audiobooks. Select all audiobooks or only ones you specify, just like with regular books.
If you're not syncing all audiobooks, check the box next to each book you want to sync to your iPhone. If the audiobook comes in sections, select which you want to transfer. You can also choose to manage your audiobooks in playlists and sync those playlists in the Include Audiobooks from Playlists section. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for each type of content you want to include on your iPhone, then click Apply. By default, your Windows PC syncs to your iPhone whenever you connect them.
You can have iTunes ask you before syncing, and if there are some items you never want sync, you can keep them from being synced. By default, whenever iPhone is plugged into power and is connected over Wi-Fi to your Mac or to iTunes on your Windows PC, the computer syncs your selected content to iPhone.
